Self Storage Tips
Let’s face it, most people don’t enjoy packing and moving boxes. Here are a few tips to help ensure a smooth self-storage experience:
Choose the Right Size Unit: Pick a storage unit that comfortably fits all your items. Overstuffing a unit makes it difficult to access your belongings and increases the risk of damage.
Select Appropriate Containers: Use boxes for items like dishes and plastic bins with lids for things you need extra protection for or frequent access to.
Stack Wisely: Avoid placing heavy items on top of lighter ones to prevent damage.
Label Clearly: Label boxes with a category (e.g., Kitchen, Bedroom) and list the main items inside to make it easier to find things later.
Clean Before Storing: Ensure all items, especially garden tools, are clean to prevent dirt from spreading to other belongings.
Prepare Appliances: Clean and disinfect freezers or refrigerators before storage. Keep the door slightly open using a piece of cardboard to prevent mold.
Use Newspaper for Fragile Items: Newspaper is excellent for packing fragile items.
Prevent Rust on Tools: Apply a thin coat of WD-40 to metal tools to prevent rust during long-term storage.
Disassemble Furniture: When possible, break down furniture, such as removing the legs from dining tables, to save space.
Create an Aisle: Leave an aisle between your stacked boxes to easily access them later.
Drain Gas-Powered Tools: Drain gas-powered tools before storing them. Consider using gas stabilizers like “Sta-bil” for long-term storage.
Use Uniform Boxes: Using uniform-sized boxes makes stacking easier and more efficient.
Protect Mattresses: Use mattress covers to keep your mattress and box springs clean.
Plan Your Truck Loading: Remember that the first items loaded will be the last to come off. A little planning can save a lot of time when you reach the storage unit.
