Pack Your Boxes

Packing Basics

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a first-timer, packing and moving is something everyone experiences multiple times in their life. It can often feel overwhelming, leaving us frustrated and defeated. Here are a few helpful packing basics to help you avoid that headache!

Tip #1: Plan Your Time

Start by planning your time effectively. Estimate how long it will take to pack your items, and remember it often takes longer than expected. Allow extra time to avoid feeling rushed. This way, running out of packing tape or realizing you need more boxes won’t add unnecessary stress.

Include time for cleaning and drying your items before packing. Clean, dry items help prevent mold and pests, keeping your belongings in good condition while in storage.

Tip #2: Sort Before You Pack

Take a few days to sort your items before packing. Group heavier items together and lighter items together to streamline the process. Also, pack similar items together, such as kitchen or bathroom items. This makes labeling easier and helps you find things later.

Tip #3: Label Specifically

Be specific with your labels. The more detailed, the better! Either label the boxes with their contents directly or number them and create a chart. This way, when you’re looking for your favorite blanket or blender, you’ll know exactly where to find it.

Tip #4: Stock Up on Packing Materials

Ensure you have enough packing materials. Stock up on cardboard boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and moving blankets. Old blankets and towels can also be used to cover furniture and wrap delicate items.

Tip #5: Fill Your Boxes Properly

Fill your boxes to prevent them from collapsing and damaging your items. However, don’t overfill them either, as this can also cause damage. Use packing paper or bubble wrap to fill the boxes securely.

Tip #6: Group Similar Weighted Items

Use smaller boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lighter items. This makes them easier to move and access in the future. Avoid the temptation to pack everything in one large box, as it can become too heavy and unwieldy.

Following these tips will make your packing and moving process smoother and less stressful.
